Plants of Manu

Heliconia is a common rainforest plant. It is a host to butterfly larvae.

This gallery forest is a common scene in Manu, where river travel is the best way to cover long distances.

There is always some tree in flower any time of year, which punctuates the green expanse of jungle with yellows, reds, purples, and other bright colors.

This flower is often called "Hot Lips."

We don't know anything about this flower, but we found it growing on a vine.

Soils are poor, so tree roots are shallow. To support themselves, trees grow very big, snaking roots along the ground. These butress roots are taller than our knees!

The Iriartea Palm puts out a skirt of support roots.

The final consumer of the dead plants are termites, who make massive mounds, as well as ball-shaped nests in trees.
